Company Description

ClearGrid is pioneering the use of imagery and data to help utilities prevent and solve power outages:  by managing trees, assessing storm damage and harnessing new technology to communicate with municipalities.  Vegetation is the leading cause of power outages on the coasts, one of utilities’ largest operating expenses, a regulatory touch point – nowhere more than in the Northeast.  Nevertheless, vegetation management on distribution operates much the same way it did decades ago: trimming trees on circuits in regular rotations, typically every 3-5 years in the Northeast.   Municipalities’ expectations for accurate and up-to-date information are on the increase.   Digital photography and computer vision are opening up new possibilities for using imagery to assess damage and communicate with municipalities and customers.  But they also present new challenges.   We will enable utilities to harness imagery from smartphones, vehicles, and overhead – to plan work, assess damage, and coordinate with municipalities quickly and effectively.  We’ll harness data from the outage management system.  We’ll fuse imagery and data in novel, creative ways – to produce unique, actionable insights.  And our focus will remain squarely on electric distribution, where the vast majority of weather-related outages happen.
